Boating season has opened!

The summer officially arrived in Helsinki last week although we still had snow lying on the ground only a couple of weeks ago! With the summer finally here, it is also safe to declare boating season open, yay! If you bump into a strange looking floating bin in the harbour you should leave it there - it might be the new seabin that was just installed in Uunisaari and will be installed in a couple of other places in the near future as well! 

This machine works like a vaccuumer, sucking in floating garbage from the surface waters of the harbours. This of course aims at preventing the plastic from getting picked up by the marine food chains. My first thoughts when I saw it was OMG it is small! I am imagining the same seabin being installed in Phuket marina, where it would probably be filled in two seconds. Also, as a diver, I am wondering how to get rid of plastic underneath the surface?  And who should pay for the machine?

Anyhow, I think it is really great that the plastic issue is getting a lot of attention in the media and that people are becoming aware of the problems associated with plastics. With time, I am sure also the cleaning technology will evolve and maybe these bins will become as usual as regular trash bins on land! And of course, one should remember that the best way to decrease marine plastics is to avoid buying excessive single use plastics. Enjoy your boating season!

Venekausi on avattu! 

Kesä on vihdoin saapunut Suomeen vaikka tilanne näyttikin hälyttävältä vielä vapun alla kun lunta tuiskutti taivaan täydeltä! Kesän mukana on saapunut myös veneilykausi ja Helsingin veneilijät saattavat satama-alueilla törmätä kuvan mukaisiin kelluviin laitteisiin. Ne kannattaa jättää paikoilleen, sillä kyseessä ovat uudet "seabin"-meriroskikset jotka imevät itseensä kelluvat roskat. Ensimmäinen meriroskis asennettiin juuri Uunisaareen ja lisää roskiksia on tulossa lähiviikkojen aikana Helsingin alueille.

Näiden kelluvien laitteiden avulla yritetään estää roskien päätyminen meren ravintoketjuihin ja meren pohjalle. Yllätyin kuitenkin roskisten pienestä koosta! Jos saman laitteen asentaisi vaikkapa Phuketin Chalongin satamaan se olisi luultavasti täynnä kahdessa sekunnissa. Ja sukeltajana mietin tietenkin miten jo pohjalle päätyneet roskat saisi pois? Ja kenen kuuluu maksaa lystistä?  Laitteen teho jää nähtäväksi, toivottavasti se yllättää positiivisesti!

Mielestäni on kuitenkin erittäin positiivista että muoviongelman laajuus saa niin paljon huomiota mediassa tällä hetkellä ja että ihmiset oikeasti miettivät näitä asioita. Ajan mittaan varmasti teknologia kehittyy ja ties vaikka meriroskikset olisivat tulevaisuudessa yhtä yleisiä kuin maanpäälliset roskikset! Paras tapa saada muovit pois merestä on kuitenkin kertakäyttömuovien yleinen vähentäminen. Nautinnollisia venehetkiä!
