Joulubreikistä huolimatta olemme tehneet täällä Phuketissa hiukan esitutkimusta ja hakeneet koenäytteitä kahdesta eri paikasta: Rachan saarelta jossa vietimme joulua, sekä Nai Harnin vilkkaalta turistirannalta. Rachan näytteet haimme vedenpinnan alapuolelta ja Nai Harnin näytteet rantaviivasta. Sekä Nai Harnissa että Rachan rannoilla oli runsaasti isoja muoviroskia. Oli pillejä, muovipusseja, pulloja, jalkineita ja paljon epämääräisiä roskia.

Lapset olivat hyvin innoissaan näytteiden hakureissusta. 

Anu näytteen haussa kolmen metrin syvyydessä Rachan saarella. 

Vaikka muoveja tuntui olevan runsaasti joka paikassa oli jännittävää tutkia muoveja ​mikroskoopin alla ja hetken jo pelkäsimme että emme löydä mikromuovin muovia. Toisin kuitenkin kävi. Nai Harnin rannallta keräämässämme näytteessä näkyi skoopin alla runsaasti sinisiä muovilangan pätkiä sekä mustia, epäluonnollisen pyöreitä kappaleita. Emme vielä tiedä mistä mustat pallerot ovat peräisin, mutta muodosta päätellen ne eivät ainakaan olleet luonnollisia. Vedenpinnan alapuolelta haetut näytteet ovat parhaillaan kuivumassa joten vielä emme tiedä mitä niistä löytyy mutta loppuviikosta olemme jo viisaampia. Koenäytteiden perusteella päätämme mistä ja miten "oikeat" näytteet haetaan.

Despite the Christmas break we have proceeded with our research and collected our first test samples. We sampled one set of samples from the busy Nai Harn beach from the shoreline and another set of samples beneath the surface at the island of Racha Yai. At a first glimpse, not so surprising, we found massive amounts of bigger plastics lying on the beaches. The bigger particles consisted of straws, plastic bags, capsules, ropes from fishing gear and bottles.

Despite the bigger plastic particles, we were a bit uncertain if we would find any microplastic at all looking through the microscope. Our doubts were quickly proven unnecessary. There were big amounts of blue rope fragments as well as perfectly spherical, black microbeads that are yet to be defined. The samples taken from beneath the surface are still drying so we do not know what we will find there. Depending on these test samples, we will determine where to collect the "real" samples from. 

It´s been a while since the last dive both for me and Anu but it was almost like riding a bike! Curious fish came to say hello.  

For many years, I have felt repulsed by the hassle around Christmas. I don´t like buying gifts, receiving them and filling the house with stuff and toys we don´t need, I don´t like christmas food and feel deeply disgusted about the millions of slaughtered pigs for christmas ham, the "ultimate" traditional Finnish christmas food. Also, I don´t like the stress of driving around to relatives with tired kids high on sugar whose bedtime has passed by many hours.

Since we had kids, we decided to either elope christmas to a sunny place or just to stay home eating take-away food. Once in the past five years, we managed to take a last minute trip to Lanzarote, but other than that we have still ended up driving around to relatives with cranky children in the back seat in order not to upset anyone.

So what is on my wish list for Christmas then? Travelling, experiencing breathtaking landscapes, alone-time, babysitting for the kids, going to the hairdressers, reading a book in piece and quiet, eating good food (in piece and quiet), drinking sparkling in a pool with good friends.  

This year, we will be successful in escaping Christmas (yay) and I have not bought a single Christmas present! We are going to a paradise island called Racha Yai where we will stay four nights and spend Christmas together with Anu´s family. Last time we visited the island when Elias was 3 months old, I am thrilled to go back!   

Elias, 3 months in the picture, will be able to revisit this place this Christmas.

Kuten Maria yllä kirjoitti aiomme viettää joulua Raya Yain saarella. Toisin kuin Maria, minä olen jossain määrin jouluihminen. En nauti joulun tuomasta kiireestä, mutta tykkään kovasti joulun tunnelmasta. Viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana olemme olleet Suomessa vain muutaman joulun, mutta niinä vuosina olemme hakeneet omasta metsästä sisälle joulukuusen ja leiponeet pipareita joululaulujen säestyksessä. Meillä on myös tullut tavaksi lämmittää aamulla pihasauna ja kutsua minun sekä Vesan sisarukset ja vanhemmat joulusaunaan ja brunssille. Myös Thaimaassa meillä on pieniä joulutraditioita.

Yksi näistä on täydellinen aamupala, joka nautitaan uima-altaan ääressä :)

Olemme viettäneet usein joulua Rayan saarella. Saarella on erityinen paikka minun sydämessäni. Vuonna 2007 lokakuussa matkustimme Vesan kanssa ensimmäistä kertaa Thaimaahan, sillä olin saanut työpaikan Raya Diversilta sukellusoppaana. Työpaikkani oli Raya Yain saari, jossa asuimme kaiken kaikiaan seitsemän ikimuistoista kuukautta. Kotimme oli Raya Fatherin bungalowi, jossa ei ollut ilmastointia tai lämmintä vettä, ja internetkin tuli sinne vasta kauden puolivälissä! Melko alkeellisistä oloista huolimatta elämä saarella ja sen pienessä yhteisössä ovat olleet yksi hienoimpia kokemuksia. ​

Mikäli teillä ei ole vielä jouluksi suunnitelmia suosittelen lämpimästi, että hyppäätte Raya Diversin veneeseen ja tulette Rayan saarelle viettämään joulua kanssamme, tai jos tämä tulee liian lyhyellä varoitusajalla kehotan Marian tavoin teitä ostamaan Raya Diversin lahjakortin joko itsellenne tai jollekin toiselle :) Tiedän että saari on muuttunut paljon kymmenessä vuodessa, mutta voin silti rehellisesti sanoa tehneeni siellä elämäni mieleen painuvimmat sukellukset. 1. Mikä on tärkein päivärutiinisi?
En varsinaisesti ole rutiini-ihminen, sillä pidän siitä että asiat muuttuvat lyhyelläkin varoitusajalla. Saan jollain tavalla voimaa muutoksesta. Toisaalta nyt lapsen myötä olen joutunut luomaan rutiineja ja niistä ehkä mieluisammaksi on tullut perheen yhteiset iltarutiinit johon kuuluu yhteinen rauhottumishetki ja köllöttely sängyssä ennen lapsen nukkumaanmenoa.

2. Paras kirja, jonka olet lukenut? Miksi?
Tämä on vaikea kysymys, sillä olen lukenut monta todella hyvää kirjaa. Minulle mieluisimpia kirjoja ovat historialliset sukutarinat joista kuvastuu menneen ajan henki ja tunnelmat. ehkä parhaimpia näistä ovat olleet Gabriel García Márquezin sadan vuoden yksinäisyys, John Steinbeckin Eedenistä itään sekä Isabella Allenden Henkien talo.

3. Mihin olet aina halunnut matkustaa? Oletko toteuttanut haaveesi?
Olen ollut onnekas ja saanut matkustaa paljon ja nähdä erilaisia paikkoja ja kulttuureita. Vaikuttavampia näistä on ollut Indonesian sademetsät ja kohtaamiset orankien kanssa, Chaing Main viiden päivän hiljentymisretriitti, ja tietysti Manhattan, New York. Haaveissa on vielä joskus matkustaa Afrikkaan ja käydä safarilla, sekä trans-siperian junamatka Venäjän läpi Kiinaan, mutta nämä haaveet saavat vielä odottaa ainakin sen aikaa että poikamme on hieman vanhempi. Matkustaminen on minulle oleellinen osa elämää ja pyrimme jatkamaan matkustamista myös lapsen kanssa.

4. Haluaisitko asua ulkomailla? Missä?
Olemme keskustelleet tästä paljon mieheni kanssa ja toisaalta ulkomailla asuminen on houkutteleva ajatus, mutta toisaalta minulle on tärkeää olla lähellä ystäviä ja perhettä. Rakastan myös Suomen kesiä ja ‘oikeaa’ talvea. Ideaalitilanne olisi asua 3-6 kk ulkomailla ja lopun aikaa Suomessa. Ja edelleen voin ilokseni todeta, että juuri tämä järjestely on ollut meillä käytössä jo lähes kymmenen vuotta!

5. Lempikukkasi?
Minulla ei ole kukkia kotona, sillä en muista kastella niitä. Tykkään katsella kukkia luonnossa ja yksi kauneimpia kukkia siellä on mielestäni kielon kukka. Joulun alla tykkään ostaa kotiin hyasintteja, sillä niiden tuoksu tuo mieleen mummolan ja lapsuuden joulut.

6. Unelma-ammattisi?
Oikeastaan olen parhaillaan unelma ammatissani. Suomessa työskentelen Metsähallituksella meriluonnonsuojelussa ja saan olla mukana hoitamassa ja tutkimassa mereisiä suojelualueita, sekä antamassa asiantuntija-apua uusien suojelualueiden perustamiseksi. Jotta työni olisi täydellinen unelma-ammatti lisäisin työnkuvaani enemmän hallinnollista puolta sekä palan kokeilevaa tutkimusta. Mikäli vaihtaisin alaa kokonaan tekisin työkseni geneettistä lääketiedettä ja etsisin parannuskeinoja sairauksiin :)    

7. Tärkein periaatteesi äitinä?
Olla läsnä lapsen elämässä. Mielestäni on tärkeää kuunnella lasta, vastata lapsen hymyyn, asettaa hänelle rajat sekä antaa mahdollisimman paljon rakkautta ja läheisyyttä.  Olen nauttinut äitiyslomasta ja toisinaan toivon sen jatkuvan pidempään.

8. Hetki, joka on jäänyt mieleesi?
Tietysti lapsen syntymä ja hetkiä hienoilta matkoilta. Elämässä on ollut paljon myös ns. pienempiä arkisia hetkiä jotka ovat syöpyneet mieleen. Kuten vierailut siskon luona, kun vastaan juoksi kaksi pientä tyttöä, jotka olivat äärimmäisen onnellisia jälleennäkemisestä. Minulla on ollut paljon mieleenpainuvia hetkiä myös töissä, sillä olen saanut viettää pitkiä aikoja merellä ihanien ihmisten kanssa.  

9. Oletko kenkä- vai laukkuihminen?
Oikeastaan molempia. Rakastan kalliita laukkuja ja kenkiä, mutta valitettavasti minulla ei ole rahaa ostella niitä, joten päädyn ihailemaan niitä kauppojen hyllyillä ja netissä.

10. Lempipuuhasi kesällä? Aikuisten kesken?
Viihdyn mökillä ystävien kanssa ja rakastan myös hyviä ravintoloita ja brunsseja. Voisin istua juttelemassa ystävien kanssa hyvän ruoan merkeissä tuntikausia ja nauttia kesäillan lämmöstä ja hyvästä seurasta. ​

In order to get to know us better, Anu and I will answer 10 highly important questions for you guys. I am up first, here we go!  

1. What is your most important daily routine?
I would have to say my morning coffee. Preferably alone, in peace and quiet before the kids are up or after I have dropped them off to daycare (at work, that is). I also like a glass of cold white wine in the evening but I guess calling that a routine would make me seem like an alcoholic.

2. The best book you have ever read?
I am a big consumer of scandinavian criminal novels (mostly Swedish) but I can´t really say that they would be life changing or eye opening in any way. A really good book that I still remember from reading in junior high is “Zoo Station: The story of Christiane F” which is about a teenage girl in Berlin in the 70´s who gets driven into the dodgy world of heroin.

3. Where have you always wanted to travel?
I have always been attracted to the Polynesian islands and in my mind I picture them as paradise on earth. Maybe Bora Bora, Tuvalu or Easter Island? My friends Mimmi, Teresa and I had the privilege to visit Mabul Island in Borneo in 2008 and that was as close to paradise on earth I have been so far. I would love to go back there some day (in the same company). Also, I have never visited the States and I would also like to visit British Columbia in Canada some day where mushrooms are the size of me and trees are a thousand years old.

4. Would you like to live abroad?
I am tempted to answer yes considering the racist, political climate in Finland at the time being. However, Finland is a terrific place to live with children, so for now I am happy with Finland. A huge bonus to be able to spend winter here in Southeast Asia though!   

5. What is your favourite flower?
I love orchids, sadly enough I am no good at taking care of them haha! Lily´s and long roses  are beautiful as well.

6. Dream job?
As a child, I wanted to become a veterinarian. I would be very happy with being a marine biologist if I wouldn´t have to worry about financing all the time and if I could just do research with an unlimited amount of money. Unfortunately, it doesn´t work that way for biologists. I have often considered changing my career to become a doctor, maybe I will fulfill that dream some day.    

7. Your most important principle as a mom?
A child´s most important need is love and the feeling of security. Everything else is secondary. I don´t freak out if the child does not eat when dinnertime, go to sleep at an exact time (although it would be nice to have some childfree time in the evenings!!!) and in comparison to many other parents, I probably am too “slacky”. I want to read a goodnight story to my children every night.

8. Are you a bag or a shoe person?
Neither one. I currently own maybe three pairs of shoes and as many bags. I have tried to minimize the amount of clothes and accessories in the past years and don´t feel the need to shop. I do enjoy strolling around on flea markets and buying clothes especially for the kids from time to time though.

9. Your most memorable moment?
A clichée but the births of my children. I don´t think a woman can experience anything more powerful and magical than that. And the second you get to hold your newborn child for the first time. Almost makes me want to have a new baby. Luckily only ALMOST.   

10. What is your favourite thing to do on a summer´s night?    
The easiest question so far! Drinking cold white wine with my friends (or my man) at the sea, eating good (vegetarian) snack food and just chatting the night away. Maybe have a skinny dip while a little bit tipsy :)

Olemme nyt olleet reilun viikon ajan täällä uudessa kodissamme Thaimaassa. Ensimmäisen kulttuurishokin jälkeen alamme tuntemaan olomme jo kotoisaksi täällä tropiikissa. Kulttuurishokki on tosin ehkä väärä sana, lähinnä olimme shokissa siitä kuinka paikka oli räjähtänyt käsiin viimeisien vuosien aikana! Ennen tällä suhteellisen rauhallisella kadulla on ny fintness-centeriä centerin perään, ravintolaa, massagemestaa, kampaajaa ja what not.

Tie on erittäin vilkkaasti liikennöity ja se on suuri haaste vilkkaan kaksivuotiaan kanssa joka ei hetkeäkään malttaisi olla paikoillaan. Toinen pikkumies onneksi harjoittelee vasta kävelemistä. Onneksi pääsemme reissaamaan jonkun verran. Jouluksi olemme lähdössä Raya Yain saarelle jossa ei pitäisi olla lainkaan liikennettä (ellei sekin ole räjähtänyt käsiin). Anun vanhemmat tulevat mukaan, he saapuvat 20. päivä ja torstaina Marian muu perhe, eli Ontrei ja Elias-poika liittyvät seuraamme. Emme malta odottaa!  

Näkymää hotellilta. Muuten kiva paikka, mutta vaatekaapit ja näin ollen kaikki vaatteet haisevat homeelle. Ehkä pystymme kuitenkin elämään tämän asian kanssa ;) 

Lapset arvostavat uintimahdollisuutta. 

Mitä olemme tähän asti puuhastelleet täällä paitsi lojuneet altaalla? Olemme käyneet esittelemässä projektiamme matkanjärjestäjä TUI:lle ja Raya Diversille, luoneet kontakteja paikallisiin, totuttu uuteen arkeen ja perehdytty mikromuovianalyyseihin. Saamme tiimiimme vielä tammikuun alussa Ellan Helsingin Yliopistolta joka tulee tekemään gradua mikromuoveista. Ensi viikolla haemme ensimmäiset koenäytteet rannalta. Jännittävää nähdä mitä löytyy!

We have now been in Thailand a little bit longer than a week and we are starting to feel all settled in. There have been a few "set backs" when we first arrived, such as the traffic outside our hotel area that is just insane. Ellen and me almost got run over by a car already! The other set back is that our wardrobes smell like mold which in turn means that our clothes smell like mold. Luckily, we will do some travelling from here.

We are heading to Racha Yai, a small paradise island for Christmas to combine work and holiday and there should be no traffic at all there (at least there was none four years ago). We will also sample many beaches here at the mainland so we have many beachdays ahead. The rest of Marias family, Ontrei and Elias will arrive on Thursday and Anu´s parents are also joining us on the 20th of December, not to mention Marias sister´s family that will join us after Christmas. We can hardly wait!

We haven´t only been slacking by the pool though. We have presented our microplastic project to TUI-travelling agency representatives and Raya Divers - our Finnish diving company collaborators, made some local contacts, been further looking into the microplastic analyses and worked for financing. We have also found a new member for our research team, namely Ella from Helsinki University will join us in the form of a Master´s Thesis in January. Next week we will get our first sand samples to conduct some pre-research. We are anxious to find out what we find in the sand under the microscope!
