Vedenalaista näytteenottoa ja miniloma

Saimme tammikuun alusta vahvistusta tiimiimme kun Ella saapui Helsingistä Phuketiin. Hän tekee gradua mikromuoveista Helsingin Yliopistolle, samalle laitokselle kuin Anu ja minä aikoinaan. Palasimme Ellan kanssa viime viikonloppuna Raya Yain saarelle hakemaan lisää vedenlalaisia näytteitä ja saimme potiksi 30 säkkiä hiekkaa mukaan raahattavaksi. Jessus että märkä hiekka painaa! Nyt on noin kolmasosa säkeistä saatu turvallisesti perille mantereelle anaylisoitavaksi ja loput saapuvat toivottavasti tänään kun loppujengi palaa tänne. Meidän perheen oli tultava takaisin jo eilen koska Elias ja Ontrei lensivät aamulla Suomeen. Niin se aika vaan rientää.

"Sweet lips"-kalat tulivat ihmettelemään meininkiä. 

Tämä taisi olla ainakin Anun ja minun osaltani viimeinen miniloma Rayan saarelle sillä kotiinpaluu häämöttää jo nurkan takana, enää pari viikkoa Thaimaata jäljellä! Itselleni tämä on aika ok, lähtihän muu perhe jo edeltä kotiin ja Suomen turvallinen kupla houkuttelee oudolla tavalla jo. Sitten seuraakin muovien analysointi, tutkimuksen seuraava vaihe. Jännä nähdä, koostuvatko löytämämme mikromuovit samoista muoveista mitä rannoilta löytyy dumpattuna vaiko jostain muista, merivirtojen tuomista muoveista. 

Underwater sampling and minivacation

We got a new member to our team when Ella from Helsinki joined us in the beginning of January. Ella is writing her Master´s Thesis for Helsinki University about microplastics in marine habitats. We went back to the Raya Yai island for some more underwater sampling last weekend and collected 30 bags of sand. Jesus how the sand weighs! One third of the sand is now brought back safely to the mainland for analyses and the rest will hopefully arrive today when the rest of the gang returns. My family had to come back earlier than the rest since Ontrei and Elias flew back to Finland this morning. Time just flies here!

Last weekend was most probably the last minivacation for Anu and me since we will be heading back to Finland in just two weeks. There we will start the next stage of the study, namely analyses of the plastic material. It will be interesting to see if the microplastic is composed of the same macrolitter you find on the beaches or something else washed ashore with the oceans currents. Time here in Thailand has gone by really fast but somehow I don´t feel to sad about going home, especially since half of my family already returned home. In a weird way, I always miss the safe Finnish bubble when abroad although the land is now like a "fifty shades of grey"-painting and you can´t leave home without rubber boots. I´m sure I´ll regret my words in two weeks haha!
