We are so glad you found us!
You are welcome to follow our work in Thailand with marine, endangered animals and marine awareness. Here you can read our newest blog posts about what we have been up to.
Autumn already turned into winter in Finland and we are ready to start packing for sunny Thailand! Only this time, we are bringing three kids and two men along. Despite our name, we will not be targeting sea turtles this time. Instead, our scope will lie on microplastics found on the sandy beaches. Microplastics is defined as small (<5 mm) plastic particles of variable origin that end up in the oceans and further enter the marine food chains. Two of the rascals that we will be brining along to Thailand. Thinking ten years backwards, hardly no one had heard about microplastics. Today, we know that microplastics is found worldwide, even in arctic areas far from human settlement. Still, many questions remain such as the extent of the problem, where the plastic originates from and how marine organisms respond to the plastic. This is what Anu and me aim to share some light on, first in Phuket, and then in Finland. We are thrilled to announce our collaborators of incoming season; Scandinavian Orthex, that you might be familiar with from potties, baby bottles, sippy cups or baby baths. If parenting is not an issue for you, you might find Orthex´s products on your balcony in the form of flower pots or in your kitchen drawer in the form of kitchen supplies. Orthex invests in sustainable, re-usable plastics. A bold move from Orthex, a plastic manufacturer, to join us! Photo: Orthex We also have Raya Divers, a Finnish diving company, aboard. As a matter of fact, you might bump into us on one of Raya Diver´s boats if you decide to take a diving trip in Phuket incoming winter! The University of Helsinki will also be conducting research with us. Flight tickets, visas, as well as a large portion of the research equipment is all taken care of. We still need to find a Master´s student to join our team, but we feel certain than we will find the right person before the beginning of the project. You will be able to follow the progress of our project through this blog. We guarantee plenty of pictures, both beneath and above the surface, sandy beaches, children, research and thai life in general so stay tuned! In the next blog, you will get to know us better. Yes, we need to take some fresh pictures soon. |
